Dosage

New seeding: Mix 10% white clover with the Hippo-Green grass seed mixture.

Overseeding or interseeding: Use 10kg per hectare for interseeding or overseeding with clover.

Usage

New seeding:
Sow your white clover mixed with the Hippo-Green grass seed mixture from late April to late May or from mid-August to mid-September. The seed cannot tolerate frost. Sow it at a depth of 0.5 to 1cm, which is shallower than regular grass seed because clover requires more light to germinate. Preferably sow in the first half of September during a wet period for a higher chance of success.

Overseeding pasture:
Ensure that the existing pasture is mowed very short to provide sufficient light for the white clover. Sow it at a depth of 0.5 to 1cm and preferably sow in the first half of September.

More about 100% white clover

Increasing the proportion of white clover in your pasture has several benefits. It adds flavor to the grass, brings nitrogen back into the soil from the air, and improves soil biology.

White clover can be used to overseed your pasture to introduce a clover component. In new seedings, white clover can also be added to the Hippo-Green grass seed mixture. By adding 10% to the grass mixture or overseeding in the pasture, you can create a healthy pasture that fixes nitrogen (providing nutrients for the pasture) from the air and stores it in the soil.

White clover has a highly positive effect on horses. It contains a high level of protein, lignin, and minerals, and it has up to three times more calcium and magnesium than grass. The sugar content of clover is also significantly lower than that of grass.

You can easily maintain the proportion of clover in the pasture by refraining from using artificial fertilizers. Learn more about fertilizing on our pasture management step-by-step guide page.

Tip

It's best to maintain the proportion of clover in the pasture between 5% to 10%. Having too much clover can provide an excessive amount of easily digestible proteins for your horse. A proportion of 5% to 10% fits perfectly into a healthy diet for your horse or pony. If the proportion of clover becomes too high, consider applying some extra BelFarm organic fertilizer to the pasture to promote the growth of grass and restore balance.
